Attila is definitely your better bet though if you A) have a banging system that can handle the sometimes-chunkiness, B) prefer the land combat, and C) want the game to really pop visually.Click here to set your flair! Welcome to /r/TotalWar!Ī subreddit for all of those who love the Total War series. Overall, Rome 2 is my favorite, it balances the campaign map, empire management, diplo/political system, land and water combat the best (IMO). Example, playing WRE, where almost all your units are mid-to-high tier to start, finance is where you struggle the most.Īgain, go for either. To expand on the latter, Attila's building mechanics leave no room to "move-backwards." Once you tech up to high enough tiers, you quickly find that you cannot recruit cheap, expendable units - like the kind you want to fill out a general's regional army or leave behind to help quell a troublesome region. Some cons: sea combat is boring - something about it was lost from Rome/Shogun 2 to Attila, and you can easily trap yourself in a bad position. Highlights for Attila: The combat feels amazing - nothing wrong with Rome 2 but just doesn't have the same visceral feel as Attila, the game is gorgeous, and the political system is daunting (see above) out the gate. I botched my first two runs in Rome 2 by not thinking ahead far enough. To expand on the latter, you're trying to build an empire in Grand Campaign, rather than in WRE, if you are playing the Romans, you are simply trying to survive, which does change things. Some cons: Political system is daunting at first - both games have basically the same system but Attila definitely packaged it in a better fashion, the game can get very challenging, even on Normal. Highlights for Rome 2: Great campaigns (DLC included), campaign map management is better of the two, very well optimized, and you really feel like the faction you are playing. Both are really great games, you couldn't go wrong picking either game by random. Think we missed one?
